Cast a Larger Shadow: Six Ways to Avoid Being Seen as Too Small for the Job
Sunday, March 29, 2009
The economy has made everyone nervous. Selecting a business to tackle just about any task is now fraught with more hand-wringing than has been seen in decades. Amazingly, concern with opting to work with small businesses is greater than many might imagine.
The issue centers on sustainability; will the small business exist during and after the assignment or will a bump in the road send it crashing into the abyss?
Given the state of some of the country’s largest and best know companies, that concern may not be wholly unfounded. However, small businesses tend to be the ones hurt first and fastest in downturns; cash flow interruptions can have dire impact.
A small business can appear more viable for the long-term by following these six suggestions that add up to it casting a larger shadow.
- Pay your bills on time, every time. Aside from building goodwill with suppliers, it helps send a message of solvency.
- Present your business professionally in all possible forms, from invoices, business cards, Web site design and content, even how phone calls are answered.
- Take on bigger jobs that you can manage through smart subcontracting.
- Get visible in the community through simple, yet effective publicity efforts, involvement with business or civic organizations or easily accomplished email campaigns.
- Make certain all references are solid, from your customers to your credit rating.
- Do pro bono work. It always pays dividends and speaks volumes about commitment.

Thank you for this useful article. I wonder if you have any further suggestions to add to this list nearly a year on further down the line? Has the situation improved for small businesses? Bruce.

Greetings!
This is my 8th month in my new job and I don’t find it challenging. The tasks are so easy for me to handle. The pay is not as much as I receive from my previous company but it is commensurate to my workload. I feel stagnated. I talked to my boss thrice but only advised me to hold on. Promised me that he will transfer me to a new role. I’m afraid that this new role would still be the same - boring. The company is good and I don’t want to leave. I want to apply to other positions internally but I will have to wait for 18months from the day I was regularized. Coming to work everyday becomes dragging. What will I do?

The future is not so bright as it was in the 50s. Wearing the bad of the others while giving the impression that everything was perfect kept them all in check.
Then came the 80’s with its open antaganism over everything that could be done. The overwatch sentinels started to react. Skynet is active….

An informal economy is economic activity that is neither taxed nor monitored by a government, contrasted with a formal economy. The informal economy is thus not included in that government’s Gross National Product (GNP). Although the informal economy is often associated with developing countries, all economic systems contain an informal economy in some proportion.

When entering a small office setting, regardless of the position that you are doing always remember that you are there to perform a job. There is nothing else you need to focus on but the responsibility of what your job requires.
If your boss or a co-worker has a tendency to speak of their personal matters regularly avoid getting involved or feeling good or bad about the matter. Most people look to express feeling of emotion of good and bad just to release inner feelings. Getting involved on a personal level beyond listening can open you up to many areas that you may not want or be able to handle. If you can avoid involvement at all that would be the best. If you cannot keep it to a minimal.

This is still as relevant today as when it was initially posted. As a small business owner, I have been through the ups and downs—especially with the recent decline in economy, and if followed, these suggestions will definitely help any business—not only to stay afloat, but to thrive and do well.

This is a good article and touches on some very real opportunities to keep your small business in the game. The information within this might be a year old but I think it will be invaluable for month if not years to come as we don’t look like coming out of this recesssion any time soon.

Perception is the key. There is no need to tell a client how many staff you have, as long as you can do the job I work under the magic box theory, as long as the product that come out of the magic box is what is requested, there is no need to see the magic inside.

All of those are really great ideas. One of the most overlooked of them is the business cards. So many small businesses, especially in smaller towns and cities, totally neglect having business cards. It’s one of the least expensive ways to market yourself and those business cards would come in real handy any time you were doing anything within the community, i.e. fundraiser, volunteer work, etc.

I agree with the author. All of these elements are important. I like to think of it as overcoming the liabilities of being small and new (potentially). Anyone making a purchase from or doing business with your company wants to feel as safe and secure in their decision as possible. Any steps you can take to overcome this “liability” are helpful. @connectedentrepreneur.com

Often work that is done by smaller companies is better because it is generally carried out by the business owner or someone close to them. The business owner is highly invested in getting the job done right (especially in this market) as you want your work to be spoken about and to receive referrals from it. I hope people take a punt on small businesses or there will be many more that have to close and die a silent death. We are an entrepreneurial society and we encourage small businesses to start up, as a community we should be supporting them to continue to operate.

Good post. I agree that a small business’s reputation among customers, business associates, governmental agencies, banks, and any other individual or organization that deals with the business will have a major impact on its longevity.
By Tortuga Bob on 07/29/10 at 11:11pm
Many small business owners are nervous also, not just those who hire them. In this recession, if the small business is of the “brick and mortar” type, there is probably good reason to be concerned, with probably a lot to lose if the business starts to slide. My advice, especially for a beginning entrepreneur, is to go small, I mean very small, maybe an eBay business or their own website, that would require only a small investment. These are the small business owners who are not nervous, because, even if they fail, they have not lost much. However, many of them are doing very well, and in increasing numbers.

Thank you for a very interesting article.
I blame the banks for helping to strangle small businesses.
After all the banks had a public bailout, small business can only go to the banks for help through the recession and if the banks are not lending but hanging on to the money themselves what chance has small businesses got.
And when they do occasionally lend they are charging exhorbitant interest rates.
The banks got us in this mess, so surely they should play ball and help get us out of this mess.
Not kill us off….

We often tell people that it’s not about the CV or resume are others call it only but about how much attitude, determination and self belief is on display. At Rshaped Lives we teach teach people that how our clients see themselves is often is how people see them and their businesses even before they are met in person, so how true this article is in terms of not being too small on ones’ own eyes.
The tip about pro bono work is timeless. You reap what you sow. It is such a dorr opener too.

In today’s economy, I believe small businesses are in danger of going bankrupt. However, there are a lot who have proved me wrong. They may have acquired all the suggestions that you have mentioned. It is not easy for small businesses to compete with big ones. Those big sharks will crush them. But I guess there are just some who really has the determination, passion and the perseverance to excel in their own field of business.

Often while fighting the Knights war we weren’t allowed to mention that Foodman had been banned from the forums because the mods would consider that “discussing bans” and warn us. This made for interesting coversations when people would actually SEE that Foodman was banned and ask what had happened. I finally fell back on using private messages on a mass scale to distribute information to other OGame players when I needed to say something the mods would disagree with just because I knew they would abuse their power and close warn/close anything they didn’t like…nose smaller

I am in the exact same situation as you. I have been moved from one building to a new workplace. I was promised a better role, then they changed me to a really easy job, they said it is temporary & when there is a vacant position I will be changed to something better. I love the place I work so I will not quit.. I think your best off waiting (if you know you will be put to a new role) as quitting a job is too easy. I know I’ll feel so much better when I do get to try new tasks..

These are simple, yet important suggestions for ALL business owners. A lot of people make the mistake of skipping some of these vital steps when starting or marketing their business, then wonder why they just aren’t able to beat their competitors. if you mean using the “.biz” for a domain like “yourbusiness.biz” there are no requirments. But what you want to do if you can is get a .com
Reason is because most people will type your domain name as a .com vs a .biz…...most of the times they don’t remember it
What you want to do is get a domain name with the keyword of your business niche in the domain.
You want to make it easy for someone to remember….fuel pump replacement

Nice tips, Chuck. I like the asking questions tip. I’d like to add that everytime you ask someone a query, it implies, since you assume they know the answer, that you see them as a capable specialist. Everyone loves that. This can be a great relationship builder. But you need to walk a fine line between basically desirous to learn & seeming needy.

Owners of large firms are looking only to make money and invest them elsewhere. They believe their company will always be very productive. If one quarter of the profit would be set aside, then the company will no longer reach the bankruptcy at first breath of crisis like it is in these days.
The small firms spend money more carefully, for this reason they resist more.

Useful tips, but as I see it the problems come when you have to make the transition from being a one man band to taking on staff. That’s when you really have to decide whether the jobs you are getting are too big to handle.
